6 Easy Ways to Improve Navigation in Your Blog

Navigation means moving/navigation from one place to another. In terms of webpages, it stands for exploring and linking one webpage with other. Improving the navigation in your blog means your readers will be able to find MOST out of your blog.

Best content and good amount of traffic are equally important in comparison with navigation convenience, when the reader enters first time in your blog!

Here I am introducing few ways, which will help you to improve the navigation and its implementation can improve usability of your blog.

Use Breadcrumbs

This is a very easy fix, and one I don’t see on many blogs. Breadcrumbs show the current path of the page at the top of the post like “Home -> Blogging & WordPress -> Post Name. You can easily implement breadcrumbs in your blog by using Breadcrumbs WordPress Plugin.

Use Pagination

Rather than using WordPress default navigation system i.e. “Older Posts” or “Newer Posts”. Implement pagination in your blog (Same like Google Search Results), it is possible to show page numbers; use this plugin WP-PageNavi.

Use Excerpts

I prefer to have post excerpts on homepage instead of showing the full post, because it feels very tidy. Your blog homepage is the main interface of your blog and it is well said “First Impression is the Last Impression”, there should be “Read More” button, so that if reader is interested in reading the full story, he can use the button and enjoy.

Make Your Post Multi-Page

If you write very large blog posts, which cannot be adjusted on single page. You can break it up into multiple pages using a plugin like Multi-Page Toolkit. It not only provides better usability, but it creates multiple post pages so you can get more indexed in the search engines.

Show Related Posts

It is one of the most effective ways for improving your blog navigation; it makes your reader to stay on your blog for a long time. All it takes is a plugin this Yet Another Related Post Plugin.

Make Full use of Sidebars

Sidebar enables you to put many extra features around your blog post. You can use the sidebar for placing most popular posts or most viewed posts. Do give a try to these two plugins : Popularity Contest and WP Post Views.

All the above plugins and tips make your blog navigation efficient to large extent. What all ideas do you implement for navigation improvement? Do share with us.
